Beaches

Empire is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Family friendly Empire Beach—featuring a playground, grilling equipment and fire rings, and an historic lighthouse—is only a few blocks from downtown. Only minutes away and accessible by bike or car is North Bar and Esch Road beach. Here and on surrounding shorelines, visitors can explore Lake Michigan for miles, enjoying bright blue water and panoramic views.

 

Empire Beach Village Park

Just west of downtown - public beach with bathrooms, playground and onsite parking for a small fee. Featuring one of the newest working lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

Bar Lake

The beach at North Bar Lake is one of the most popular beaches in Sleeping Bear Dunes. The outlet of North Bar Lake meets Lake Michigan here, and kids love to play in the warm, shallow stream.

 Beach

The beach at Esch Road (also known as Otter Creek Beach) is one of the most popular beaches in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Otter Creek comes out to Lake Michigan, a favorite spot for kid’s to play.

Glen Haven
 Beach

After swimming on the beach, stroll down Main Street of this famous ghost town to the General Store and working Blacksmith shop or walk along the beach to the Maritime Museum.

 Beach

Wide stretch of sand with epic views to the north of Empire Bluff and Sleeping Bear Point. On a clear day, you can see South Manitou Island. Leashed pets are allowed to the left of the boardwalk when facing the water.

River Point

Take your pick of river or open water at this popular swimming area where Platte River empties into Lake Michigan. A nesting area for the endangered Piping Plover, heed warning signs to protect this important species.

Good Harbor Bay Beach

At the end of CR-651, beautiful Good Harbor Beach with a view of North Manitou Island, and is very popular on a hot summer day. There is a paved parking area at the road end with a few picnic tables and vault toilet.

Bohemia Beach

Sparkling sand, always aquamarine water, and amazing sunsets over views of Pyramid Point and Whaleback sand dune make this beach a quiet gem. Pets are allowed on leash only west of CR-669. Beach fires are permitted.
